Biomet reports 1% decline in implant sales

Implant maker Biomet 3i reported a 1% decline in dental reconstructive devices in the third quarter of fiscal 2010 compared to the same period a year before. U.S. implant sales increased 1%, however.

For the quarter (end-February 28), the company reported a net loss of $3 million on sales of $670 million worldwide. But this compares to a net loss of $479 million on sales of $615 million for the same quarter in 2009.

The results excluded the effects of currency fluctuations, Biomet noted. In actual dollars, the company's implant sales were up 3%.

"Dental reconstructive device sales continued to be impacted by pressure on the dental implant market due to the global economic climate, but to a lesser extent than the prior few quarters," the company reported.

In the second quarter, Biomet's implant sales were down 8% versus the same quarter the previous year.

The Encode Complete System, which allows dentists to make impressions for implants without copings, continued to receive favorable market acceptance worldwide during the quarter, the company said.
