Wrigley launches Orbit for Kids

Wrigley has developed a new line of Orbit sugar-free gum specifically for children and is encouraging dental care providers to help their patients better understand the oral health benefits of chewing sugarless gum.

The company introduced Orbit for Kids this week at the American Dental Hygienists' Association meeting in Boston.

"While parents understand the importance of brushing and flossing twice a day, many don't realize the importance of proper oral care throughout the day," said Amanda Seay, DDS, a mother of four who practices in Charleston, SC, and a spokesperson for the Orbit for Kids campaign.

Orbit gum contains xylitol, a sugar-free sweetener that has been shown to have a number of oral health benefits. In addition, chewing sugar-free gum has its own oral health benefits, including stimulating saliva, which neutralizes plaque acids and strengthens enamel, and eliminating food debris after meals and snacks.

"Saliva is one of the mouth's most powerful defense mechanisms," she said. "A lot of dentists and hygienists don't know that stimulated saliva is different from resting saliva. Stimulated saliva causes an increase in calcium, which helps generate and rebuild enamel."

By using Orbit for Kids gum as a complement to brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash, parents have another simple and fun option to help protect their children's oral health, Dr. Seay added.

Orbit for Kids gum is currently available in select U.S. markets and nationwide in July. It comes in two flavors specifically designed to appeal to younger palates: strawberry banana and bubble gum. It is available in 14-tab envelopes ($1.29) and multipack bags with 10 micro packs ($4.49).
