The ADA is applauding New York City's proposed ban on large servings of soda and sugary beverages.
While the ban may not pass, the proposal has cast "a spotlight on the issue of frequent and excessive consumption of soda and other sugary beverages, which raises the risk of adverse health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay," William Calnon, DDS, president of the ADA, wrote in a statement issued June 1.
He acknowledged that "the stick" may not work better than "the carrot" when it comes to influencing dietary habits. However, the urgency of addressing Americans' sugar intake is highlighted by statistics, such as 1 in 5 Americans having untreated caries, Dr. Calnon noted.
