Joe Theismann, a Super Bowl champion quarterback with the Washington Redskins, has teamed up with SaniBrands to introduce a new mouth rinse designed for athletes who wear mouthguards.
Defense Sport mouthguard rinse is scientifically created to clean and remove dirt and bacteria from the mouthguards, according to the company. This rinse was designed to help keep a mouthguard clean without exposing the athlete to alcohol and sugar. The patent-pending formula has a fresh mint taste and can be used before, during, and after competition, SaniBrands noted.
Theismann acknowledged that the importance of having a clean mouthguard was never discussed by coaches, trainers, players, parents, and even doctors when he was playing.
"The one danger that I wasn't aware of in all of my years of playing ball was all the germs I was exposing myself by removing and inserting my mouthguard with dirty hands," said Theismann, who played for 15 professional seasons, in a press release.
Theismann contracted a bacterial infection after a game in Montreal in 1971 and said that it stemmed from poor field conditions, where dirt, bacteria, and chemicals were exposed to his mouthguard. The illness lingered for approximately three weeks, which included a bacterial infection and a burning sensation around his mouth that made eating and drinking painful.
