Idaho dentist goes from Billy Bob Teeth to kids' oral care

An Idaho dentist who made a small fortune off the novelty product Billy Bob Teeth is working to bring dental hygiene programs to the state's elementary schools, according to an Associated Press story.

Richard Bailey, D.M.D., developed and sold more than 12 million sets of the novelty choppers before selling the business to his partner in the late 1990s, according to the story.

He's practiced dentistry in northern Idaho ever since, and is now promoting a new project: teaching elementary school kids how to care for their teeth.

In 2005 Dr. Bailey introduced a flossing regime in classrooms across northern Idaho. He is now adding brushing to the program, which is being tested in northern Idaho schools. He hopes to eventually take the hygiene initiative statewide, according to the story.

"I'm trying to alleviate some of the guilt I have," said Dr. Bailey, who acknowledges he profited highly from "making people look worse" with Billy Bob Teeth.
