South Carolina legislators are discussing a bill that would provide free dental checkups for students, according to an Associated Press (AP) story.
The state Senate passed S. Bill 286 in April 2009 and passed it onto the House for consideration. The House Committee on Education and Public Works is now slated to discuss the bill this week, according to the AP.
The legislation would create a pilot program in three to five of the state's poorest counties that would require children in kindergarten, third, seventh, and 10th grades -- or whenever they first enter the state's school system -- to be screened for dental issues, the story concluded.
