A class-action lawsuit is seeking damages in excess of $5 million from McNeil, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson and manufacturer of Listerine, according to a news story in the Palm Beach Post.
The lawsuit claims that the plaintiffs suffered various health issues after using Listerine Agent Cool Blue, a mouthwash that was recalled by McNeil in April 2007, the paper reported.
The mouthwash contained four kinds of bacteria, Brian Smith, a West Palm Beach attorney who is representing one of the lawsuit plaintiffs, told the Post.
Smith's client, Kayla Hess, was 10 when she used the product, subsequently suffering from strep throat infections, stomach cramps, and a cracked permanent molar tooth, according to the paper. She has been healthy since she stopped using the mouthwash.
The voluntary recall of the mouthwash that was marketed to children ages 6 and older involved more than 4 million bottles, according to McNeil.
