GlaxoSmithKline introduces Sensodyne ProNamel for kids

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has developed a version of its Sensodyne ProNamel toothpaste specifically for children, according to the company.

ProNamel for Children offers the same enamel strengthening benefits as the adult version: optimized fluoride formula, neutral pH, low abrasivity, and no sodium lauryl sulfate, the company stated. Unlike adult ProNamel, however, the children's version does not contain potassium nitrate due to the low incidence of sensitivity in pediatric patients.

"The increase in consumption of sodas or pop is only part of the problem when it comes to acid erosion in children's teeth," said Dominick Zero, D.D.S., Ph.D., of Indiana University School of Dentistry in a press release. "Feeding children a healthy diet, while a cornerstone for overall health, does not necessarily protect again acid erosion, as even healthy foods such as fruit and fruit juices can cause damage."

Because deciduous teeth have thinner and softer enamel, research has shown that they are more susceptible to acid wear, GSK noted. One study found that 45% of U.S. children had dental erosion in at least one tooth (Okunseri CE, et al, poster, 2008 International Association of Dental Research Meeting, Toronto, Ontario, Canada). Another study found that 79% of dental professionals believe the prevalence of erosion is on the rise, and 88% said it represents a challenge to long-term oral health (Inside Dentistry, June 2008, Vol. 4:6, Special Issue).

GSK noted that dental professionals can recommend brushing twice a day with ProNamel for Children to help restrengthen enamel and prevent long-term damage.
