To be a good leader, you must possess a way of thinking and acting based on motivation, skills, training, and specific behaviors.

Do

Be ready to learn. Recognize that the world is changing very quickly. You should be committed to continually upgrading your skills and knowledge about dentistry and dental practice management. The goal is to make decisions that will benefit patients, team members, and the practice. Increasing your knowledge base is critical to leading your practice to future success.

Don

Don't just "talk the talk." The best way to earn the team's respect is to "walk the talk." The way the doctor behaves will have a significant effect on how the team acts. Your team is looking for your guidance. The best strategy is to lead by example. For example, if you expect the team to show up on time, you can't stroll in 15 minutes late every day without causing resentment. Good leaders adhere to the rules others are expected to follow.
