Biolase Technology saw a 45% year-over-year leap in net revenue for the fourth quarter of 2012 (end-December 31) from $13.2 million to $19.1 million, compared with the same quarter a year ago.
Net income for the quarter was $1.0 million, compared with a net loss of $2.0 million for the fourth quarter of 2011.
Net revenue for 2012 also was up from $48.9 million in 2011 to $57.4 million, a 17% increase. This excluded the effects of the $1.1 million inventory repurchase in the second quarter of 2012 and one-time prepaid purchase orders from Henry Schein, the company noted in a press release.
Revenues from all-tissue Waterlase systems, diode soft-tissue laser systems, and imaging systems sales increased $2.6 million, or 29%, as compared with fourth-quarter 2011 levels. For the entire year, they were up by $6.8 million, or 23%. Biolase attributed the rise to successful efforts of its direct sales force in North America.
Diode laser systems saw a $1.3 million increase in revenue to $2.8 million, an 80% leap compared with the $1.5 million fourth-quarter total in 2011.
Imaging system net revenue, which included cone-beam and CAD/CAM products, totaled $1.6 million, or 9% of net revenue, during the 2012 fourth quarter, compared with $138,000, or 1% of net revenue, for the prior-year quarter. For the entire year, the total reached approximately $3.4 million, or 6% of net revenue in 2012, compared with $238,000, or 0.5% of net revenue, in 2011.
