Columbia, Univ. of Florida dental schools honored for diversity

The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, the University of Florida College of Dentistry, and 90 other institutions have received the 2015 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine.

The award is the only national award honoring U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion, according to the magazine. Award recipients were selected based on their institution's exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives and include all aspects of diversity, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community.

"The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees -- and best practices for both; continued leadership support for diversity; and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion," stated Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of the magazine, in a press release.

The 2015 honorees will be featured in the publication's November 2015 issue.
