UBC dental program investigated for $5M fraud

The University of British Columbia (UBC) and Canadian police are investigating an alleged $5 million fraud involving the school's dental practice residency program.

The investigation focuses on management of the Faculty of Dentistry's general practice residency program, which trains a small number of postgraduate dentists from across the country and uses clinics in British Columbia and abroad, according to a globeandmail.com story.

Senior university administrators were alerted to suspected financial irregularities involving the residency program last summer.

After confirming the possibility of financial irregularities, UBC administrators took steps last fall to secure program funds and ensure continued delivery of dental services to patients in the general practice residency clinics, according to the story.

Four clinics are listed as community programs on the residency site, including the Skidegate Dental Clinic in Haida Gwaii, the Portland Community Clinic in Vancouver, and clinics in Vietnam and Cambodia.
