The University of Michigan (U-M) is seeking $90 million in state funding as part of its $120 million plan to renovate its School of Dentistry, according to a news story on MLive.com.
While making the funding request, the university told the state that the dental school is outdated, and its "cramped labs and limited space" cannot accommodate modern research and patient care. The university wants to renovate 170,000 sq ft and add 50,000 sq ft to the building.
According to the capital outlay request, an architectural firm commissioned to study the building by the University found that 44% of the building "is in serious need of renovations."
The U-M dental school is one of two in the state and, according to officials, an estimated 60% of the licensed dentists in Michigan are U-M alumni, the story concluded.
