UCF still plans to open dental school

The University of Central Florida (UCF) still hopes to open a dental school despite shelving such plans in 2011.

A dental school is included on a "wish list" of projects that Florida's largest public university will submit to the board of governors, which oversees the state university system, according to an Orlando Sentinel story.

That list shows a $73 million dental school targeted for 2015-2016 -- a project that would not rely on state funding.

UCF's previous plan to open a dental school in Lake Nona's Medical City had received a cool reception from the board. The Florida Dental Association also opposed the idea, questioning whether Florida needed another dental school and whether the school really could offer such an expensive program without state funding.
