With new education standards of the Commission on Dental Accreditation set to become effective in 2014, dental residents in Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry's prosthodontic graduate program will now be required to place implants, according to an article on the university's website.
Prosthodontics students will meet the standard with help from a new postgraduate surgical implant training program that is supported by a $100,000 five-year grant from Biomet 3i, the article noted.
Residents in prosthodontics and advanced education in general dentistry will participate in a newly designed curriculum. An aspect of it is a 14-session summer course covering basic surgical techniques in addition to fall lectures and coursework on implant treatment planning. The goal is to prepare the residents with applicable knowledge of dental implants, regardless of whether or not they are the ones placing them.
