The Hawaii Department of Public Safety, which oversees the state's prison system, has issued a request for information for dentists to provide dental services at correctional facilities on four islands. The winning bidder is expected to provide an onsite dental clinic at each facility.
In addition to being a licensed dentist, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Provide their own equipment and supplies, including dental chair
- Have experience in an "institutional" setting
- Provide a minimum 16 regularly scheduled days a month of service to inmates
- Not be currently serving a criminal sentence (probation, parole, furlough, etc.) or employ someone with this status
The contract will be for an initial two-year period beginning October 11, with an option for a two-year extension.
The value of the contracts varies depending on the size of the correctional facility. The funds allocated for the Halawa Correctional Facility, which houses 1,144 inmates, is $310,000 for each year of the contract. The other contract values are Maui Community Correctional Center, 338 inmates, $168,000; Hawaii Community Correctional Center, 310 inmates, $140,000; and Kauai Community Correctional Center, 142 inmates, $72,000.
