The only school of dentistry in Northern Ireland may lose its accreditation from the U.K. General Dental Council (GDC) over concerns about teaching quality and available resources, the Belfast Telegraph has reported.
GDC's chief executive and registrar wrote the vice chancellor of Queen's University in Belfast, questioning the amount of resources committed to teaching dentistry, the article stated. Currently, Queen's is weathering roughly 11 million pounds ($17.8 million U.S.) in efficiency savings and 200 job losses.
After the letter was issued, a probe was launched, the Telegraph noted. The results of the recently performed inspection will be published within months, it added. A Queen's representative said that the inspection, which takes place every four or five years, was standard procedure.
Three years ago, Queen's dental course was named the top course in the U.K. by the Times Good University Guide, the article stated.
