The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) will restart a graduate dental program that provides affordable treatment across South Carolina, thanks to $1.7 million in federal funds, according to a story in the State.
The money is part of $130.8 million in grants announced September 17 by U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The grants are designed to strengthen and expand the health professions workforce in all U.S. states, according to the HHS.
At MUSC, the money will pay for an advanced general dentistry residency program for fifth-year students at the College of Dental Medicine that has been unavailable since 2006 because of a lack of money, John Sanders, D.D.S., dean of the school, told the State.
The grant will pay to train four to six students a year for five years, school officials said. The fifth-year students will treat patients with more complex dental problems than patients seen by undergraduate dental students.
The school had already planned to restart the program in 2011, according to the story.
