Technicians settle lawsuit with UNC dental school

Two dental lab technicians at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Dentistry who lost their jobs in 2007 when the dental school planned to outsource their work to private laboratories reached a settlement in their suit in April, according to a news story in the Chapel Hill News.

Their lawsuit accused UNC of not following its own Reduction in Force policies, which require the school to explore alternatives and make efforts to place affected employees in other positions first, according to the story.

"We fought this fight to hopefully help those who come after us, for UNC to follow its own policy," technician Sharon House told the paper. "Sadly, I have seen with the recent layoffs across campus the same thing occurring -- this policy not followed -- even for solid, hard-working employees. Though the workers may feel like losers, the real losers are the students and people of NC."

Terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.
