Ex dental office manager gets 7-year prison term for theft

The former office manager of a Washington dental clinic was sentenced to seven years in prison for stealing more than $560,000 from the practice and illegally obtaining prescription painkillers, according to a story in the Columbian.

Michaelee Roehrs, 66, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree theft and seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. The charges relate to her embezzling money from Sheron Dental in Hazel Dell, a suburb of Vancouver, WA, between 2001 and 2008.

During sentencing on April 1 in a Clark County court, Richard Sheron, D.D.S., described the extensive steps Roehrs took to embezzle the money from the clinic, including using the names of dead relatives when forging prescriptions for the narcotic hydrocodone, according to the story. She also deposited checks into her personal bank account and offered patients fake discounts to get them to pay for services in cash.

A new office worker at the clinic discovered the embezzlement in March 2008 after examining its business records.
