Florida A&M still hoping for dental school

Florida A&M University (FAMU) will ask the state Legislature for $1.5 million next month to support the construction of a new dental school, according to a story in the Famuan. If plans for the proposed facility goes through, Florida A&M would be the only historically black college and university in Florida with a dental school, the Famuan reported.

Sen. Alfred Lawson (D-Tallahassee) said he supports the university having a college of dentistry, although the Board of Governors has not recommended it at this time.

"They don't feel like FAMU needs a dental school at this time," Sen. Lawson told the Famuan. "This is not the best time because the economy is really tough, and universities are already having problems with funding."

At present, Florida is home to two dental schools: Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine and the University of Florida College of Dentistry.
