University president donates $285,000 bonus to scholarships

University of Florida President J. Bernard Machen, D.D.S., Ph.D., said this week he would donate his entire $285,000 bonus to a scholarship program for students who have trouble affording a college education, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Dr. Machen worked in the administration at the dental schools of the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before becoming president of the University of Florida.

He founded the Florida Opportunity Scholarships to help students whose parents didn't go to college, the AP said.

Dr. Machen's annual compensation for 2008 totaled $731,811, including salary, bonuses, and other compensation; his donation amounts to more than a third of that, the AP reported.
