On June 20, the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) announced the winners of the first EFP Innovation Award for Digital Solutions for Gum Health at its EuroPerio10 congress in Copenhagen.
Supported by GlaxoSmithKline's (GSK) independent consumer healthcare firm GSK Consumer Healthcare, the award will be given annually to three digital innovation projects that aim to improve gum health worldwide.
The first-place prize of 10,000 euros ($10,532 U.S.) was awarded to Drs. Lodewijk Gründemann and Melle Vroom, clinicians in private practice in the Netherlands, for the Dental Coach app. It provides patients with personal dental advice and risk analysis based on oral hygiene scores and smoking.
The second-place prize of 6,000 euros ($6,319) went to Dr. Boey Sean Kuan of Perio.Co in Singapore for the Dental Tracker app, which aims to improve oral health.
Lastly, the third-place prize of 4,000 euros ($4,213) went to Drs. Giacomo Baima and Mario Aimetti of the University of Turin, Italy, in collaboration with the Anti-Inflammaging Company for the artificial intelligence-based mobile app AI-Perio. The app aims to help tackle low-grade chronic systemic inflammation caused by gum disease.
