3M ESPE is closing down Brontes Technology and laying off more than half of the employees there, according to a story in the Boston Globe.
3M ESPE acquired Brontes in 2006 for $95 million in cash, and the Lexington, MA, company's 3D intraoral imaging technology serves as the cornerstone of 3M's Lava C.O.S. digital impressioning system. The technology was originally developed by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and commercialized by Brontes.
A 3M spokesperson told the Globe that the move is designed to consolidate business and take advantage of resources at its St. Paul, MN, headquarters. About 20 of Bronte's 50 employees have been offered the opportunity to continue working for 3M in St. Paul, the Globe noted.
