The ADA Foundation (ADAF) is donating $5,000 to help rebuild a medical and dental clinic in Shangla, Pakistan, the home province of 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.
The donation was announced during the 2016 ADA annual meeting's keynote speaker event, where Yousafzai shared her story and advocated for all girls to have the right to an education. Yousafzai, the youngest-ever winner of the prize, shared the award in 2014 with Kailash Satyarthi for their struggle against the "suppression of children ... and the right of all children to education," according to the Nobel Prize website.
The money will be used to rebuild the Shangla Clinic, which was destroyed by a flood in 2010. Currently, local residents don't have access to medical or dental care.
At the event, William Calnon, DDS, president of the ADA Foundation, invited ADA members to also donate to the Shangla Clinic Project. So far, more than $8,000 additional dollars have been contributed to the fund.
The ADA Foundation is still accepting donations, and anyone can contribute to the project using the PayPal button on the ADA Foundation website.
