Israeli scientists have developed a vibrating gum shield that is worn at night and acts faster than conventional braces.
The device by Jerusalem-based Aerodentis uses a vibrating silicone balloon that rests against the teeth, according to a Daily Mail story. The balloon gently moves the teeth to line up with the gum shield, which has been molded to the desired shape.
The balloon vibrates several times a second: strong enough to stimulate the teeth to move but gentle enough not to wake the patient.
Aerodentis claims teeth can be realigned in just three months, compared with 12 to 18 months with conventional braces, the article states. The system is being used by dentists in Israel and Europe.
Researchers at King's College have devised a similar piece of technology, the Acceledent, which is worn around an existing brace for about 20 minutes a day. It uses tiny pulses to gently accelerate the teeth's movement, according to Daily Mail.
