Los Algodones, a Mexican village just across the border from Arizona, has a population of only 4,000 people and yet is home to roughly 350 dentists, according to an article on Fox News Latino.
Roughly 90% of the patients visiting the practices there are Americans, Fox said. Low prices -- some 70% less than their American counterparts -- make the journey worth it. Fillings reportedly cost around $70, porcelain crowns $330, and cleanings are less than $20.
But there are drawbacks, including lack of a uniform system for education and licensing dentists, language barriers, and no investigative authority that can help patients find out if there are complaints or lawsuits filed against a dentist in Los Algodones, Fox noted.
Companies that arrange visits to dentists in the village argue that it is easy for patients to receive treatment from Mexican dentists that is on par or better than what they would get in the U.S. However, they stress the importance of researching reputable dentists in the area and advise against choosing one without knowledge of his or her expertise.
