Pa. dentist fined for not registering x-ray equipment

Jon Kanegawa, DDS, of Reading, PA, will pay $13,250 in civil penalties for failing to renew his x-ray equipment registration and for failing to pay related annual registration fees since 2003, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

"Annual registration fees are necessary to pay for the staffing, equipment, and inspection costs of the Radiation Protection Program and to ensure that we can maintain the safety of radiological equipment," DEP South-central Regional Director Rachel Diamond stated in a press release.

DEP previously fined Kanegawa for failing to pay annual registration fees. In 1995, he was fined $1,560 for failing to pay fees in a timely matter from 1989 to 1994. After again failing to pay fees from 1995 to 2002, he settled a portion of his past-due fees in July 2006.

X-ray equipment must be registered with DEP within 30 days of acquisition and reregistered yearly after that.
