Restoratives Insider: Which material promotes remineralization the most?

Dear Restoratives Insider,

One of the goals of minimally invasive dentistry is to restore carious tissue. Researchers tested three restorative materials to see if they promoted the remineralization of carious lesions by measuring their rate of release of fluoride ions.

In other Restoratives Community news, researchers wanted to better understand if the Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment (CAST) index is useful for evaluating a large group of children. They also wanted to find out if the results linked to familial factors, such as parental oral health knowledge, education, or socioeconomic status. They assessed hundreds of 6- and 7-year-old children to find out.

Did you know that while almost 80% of U.S. children and adolescents began brushing their teeth at or before their first birthday, nearly 40% of children ages 3 to 6 are using too much toothpaste when they brush? This is according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Finally, when you have a patient who needs a gingivectomy, how do you proceed? Dr. Joshua Weintraub reports on the case of a 67-year-old man found to have recurrent subgingival decay under an old composite restoration on examination. He describes performing a gingivectomy and restoring the tooth using a laser and no anesthesia for treatment.
