The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) has awarded a New York University (NYU) researcher a $1.9 million, five-year grant to study calcium control in dental enamel.
The institute awarded the grant to Rodrigo Lacruz, PhD, an assistant professor of basic science and craniofacial biology at NYU College of Dentistry. The grant will help fund research to improve the understanding of calcium's role in enamel mineralization and of the physiological processes by which enamel crystals are formed. Ultimately, the intent is to develop better strategies for preventing and treating dental caries, according to NYU.
