The National Institutes of Health has awarded an eight-year, $8.24 million grant to a University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) professor to fund his dental stem cell research.
The Sustaining Outstanding Achievement in Research award went to Ophir Klein, MD, PhD, chair of the division of craniofacial anomalies in the department of orofacial sciences at UCSF. Dr. Klein will use the funds to research how some mammals can continuously grow teeth from adult stem cells. The goal is that the research will contribute to the knowledge needed to eventually repair and regenerate teeth and organs in humans.
Dr. Klein is one of two researchers to win the inaugural award, which is funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The award is intended to provide long-term support to experienced researchers with outstanding productivity records.
