Tutogen, a subsidiary of RTI Biologics, is being accused of raiding human corpses for materials used to make dental implants, according to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald.
Useful tissues were harvested from bodies stored at forensic institutes in the Ukraine without consent from the families of the deceased, according to the Herald. The reusable tissues were then transported to Tutogen, and some of the tissue was used to make biological dental implants that were sold to Australian patients.
The Herald noted that 134 human tissue-derived implants from the company have been sold in Australia since 2006.
The dental implants are marketed in Australia under the brand name Puros and are distributed by Zimmer, the article noted.
