3M ESPE has released a statement confirming that none of its products contains the controversial chemical bisphenol A (BPA).
In the past, 3M's Concise Composite had a small amount of BPA added, but the product has been reformulated to remove it following concerns about the chemical, the company said in a statement.
Like other dental manufacturers, 3M uses the material known as bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate (bis-GMA) in many products, which is different from BPA, the company noted. Studies have shown that bis-GMA is stable under curing conditions in the mouth and does not break down to form BPA, 3M said. These studies were summarized and the findings were confirmed in the recent study published in Pediatrics (October 2010, Vol. 126:4, pp. 760-768), the company noted.
The Pediatrics study authors noted that the material called bisphenol A dimethacrylate (bis-DMA) may release BPA. 3M ESPE dental products do not include bis-DMA, the company said.
