Komet USA now offers DF Cutters, tungsten carbide instruments designed for creating a defined roughness of precious and nonprecious metal surfaces to be used in porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns.
While all-ceramic crowns are popular within the dental industry, many practitioners still place PFM crowns, the company said. Before any ceramic is placed on metal, its surface must be conditioned by a laboratory technician in a way to guarantee an optimal retention.
Because many PFM crowns are made with ceramic veneers, the metal's surface must be prepared in a way that allows the ceramic to bond properly. DF Cutters are thus manufactured with a fine-diamond toothing that creates a special surface before applying any ceramic for prescribed PFMs, according to Komet. They also have pyramid-shaped cutting blades for both abrasive cutting and controlled roughening of metal surfaces.
The cutters are available in nine different shapes.
