Lawsuit questions Trident claims; FDA to review 510(k) system

A lawsuit filed last month against Cadbury Adams calls into question Trident's claims that its Xtra Care gum strengthens and rebuilds teeth. But the litigation could also put scientific claims about the restorative abilities of calcium phosphate compounds -- used in numerous dental products -- on trial. Read more.

In other news, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued two reports suggesting how the 510(k) review process for medical devices could be improved. The goal, the agency says, is to encourage innovation, provide regulatory predictability, and ensure patient safety. But some industry observers say these changes will disrupt a system that has served patients well for more than 30 years. Read more.
