Spanish patient fights for amalgam treatment

A Spanish hospital patient has become a cause célèbre for antimercury activists worldwide by refusing to leave a hospital until treated for illnesses he attributes to his amalgam dental fillings, according to ABC Spain.

The activists claimed victory July 29 when Santiago University Hospital agreed to refer Servando PĂ©rez to the University of Valencia General Hospital for a consultation. PĂ©rez originally arrived at Santiago University Hospital in June; the hospital said it discharged him after treating him "thoroughly" but that PĂ©rez refused to leave, according to EFE news agency.

PĂ©rez then began a hunger strike July 26, claiming his body could not tolerate the hospital's food, the news agency said.

A Spanish court is investigating the case, EFE reported.
