Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is notifying dentists, retailers, distributors, and consumers that the Endomax Smart endodontics motor from Maximum Dental bears a label containing a mark resembling UL's certification mark for the U.S. and Canada, even though UL has not evaluated the product.
The Maximum Dental website describes Endomax Smart as "an endodontic micro-motor to drive NiTi instruments at a low speed with high torque, designed to get maximum efficiency from the rotary files."
UL is an independent product safety certification organization that tests products and writes safety standards.
Endomax Smart, manufactured by Maximum Dental, has not been evaluated by UL to the appropriate standard for safety for either the U.S. or Canada, and is not authorized to bear the UL Mark, UL stated in a press release. "It is unknown if these products comply with United States or Canadian safety requirements," the organization said.
Maximum Dental did not respond to a request for comment.
