Pulpdent: Embrace sealant contains no bisphenol A

In response to concerns about the potential harmful effects of bisphenol A, Pulpdent issued a release stating that its Embrace WetBond pit-and-fissure sealant contains no bisphenol A (BPA) or bisphenol A derivatives.

Among the leading pit-and-fissure sealants, only Embrace can make this claim, according to Pulpdent.

Bisphenol A is a building block of Bis-GMA, which is an ingredient in many dental resins and pit-and-fissure sealants. Embrace materials contain no Bis-GMA, and therefore there is no possibility of the presence of bisphenol A.

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) of the National Institutes of Health has studied the possible effects of current exposures to bisphenol A on human development, Pulpdent noted. "The NTP concluded that there was some concern for effects on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and children at current human exposures to bisphenol A. This has created public concern with regard to the presence of bisphenol A in many pit and fissure sealants," Pulpdent stated in the release.

Media coverage of the possible adverse health effects of bisphenol A is likely to cause apprehension among patients as well as clinicians. Concerned practitioners have the alternative to use Embrace WetBond pit-and-fissure sealant and other Embrace resins without fear of exposing patients to BPA, Pulpdent said.
