A University of Washington (UW) dental student has won the ADA's Student Clinician Scholar Award.
Third-year dental student Jonathan An was awarded the ADA's top honor for student researchers with a project titled, "Chemokine Epigenome Modification and Its Association With Bacteria in Periodontitis." He was honored during the recent ADA annual session in New Orleans, according to the UW School of Dentistry.
An took top honors in the basic science research competition. His co-authors included Robert London, DDS, and Sul Ki Hong, DDS, of the department of periodontics, as well as biostatistician Charles Spiekerman of Oral Health Sciences.
It was the second year in a row that a UW student won the Clinician Scholar Award, as Peter Yamamura (class of 2014) won last year's competition. In 2012, An won the International Association for Dental Research's Hatton Award.
An will receive $750 and a travel award to present his research at the annual Thomas Hinman Dental Meeting in Atlanta in March 2014.
