LSU dental students race for breast cancer cure

Students at the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Dentistry (LSU) recently hosted an American Student Dental Association (ASDA) volunteer event in conjunction with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

ASDA representative Angelica Singh said the correlation between oral health and breast cancer is often overlooked, and many women who undergo breast cancer treatment are unaware of the increased risk for oral complications, according to a posting on "Mouthing Off," the blog of the ASDA.

Xerostomia, increased caries risk, and the motivation to establish a good dentist/patient relationship before treatment were among the group's educational points.

Volunteers packed goody bags of dental supplies geared toward the potential oral complications of radiation therapy. The bags included Biotene mouth rinse and toothpaste, Listerine Zero, toothbrushes, and an informational pamphlet.

LSU ASDA members also showed their support for the cause by organizing a team to run in the event. The students were able to inform more than 1,200 people of the importance of their oral health and the potential complications of radiation treatment.
