In honor of National Flossing Day, November 25, the National Flossing Council (NFC) has released a white paper debunking two studies that claim only professional flossing is effective.
An NFC inquiry into the research found that the flossers in the studies were not professionals but mothers who had received some simple instructions about proper flossing, according to Armand Lione, PhD, president of the NFC.
"We hope this white paper helps flossers understand they can reduce their risk of getting cavities by flossing without depending on professionals," Lione stated in a press release. "When it comes to flossing, the limited evidence we have doesn't really say anything about professional flossing, but just says flossing can reduce cavities."
National Flossing Day is an annual event designed to increase public understanding about the importance of flossing for good dental hygiene.
The NFC is a public organization based in Washington, DC, since 1996.
