Statewide education budget cuts are forcing Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) in Georgia to eliminate its department of dental hygiene, according to a story in the Inkwell, the college newspaper.
However, the program isn't leaving Savannah. It is being relocated to Savannah Technical College, pending approval from the ADA, the paper reported. The ADA is expected to review the school's proposal in February.
If Savannah Tech takes over the program, some faculty may lose their jobs, according to the story. Savannah Tech is allowing for two full-time faculty members and a department head, while AASU currently has two additional full-time faculty members.
AASU began its hygiene program in 1968, and it was the first of its kind in Georgia. The two-year program currently has 40 students and provides dental services to much of the community.
