The University of Maine System Board of Trustees has approved a $3 million renovation plan for the University College of Bangor (UCB) Dental Hygiene Clinic, according to a story in the Bangor Daily News.
Through its Dental Hygiene program, the university offers the low-cost clinic to the public from September until April. Services, including oral exams, dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and x-rays, are provided by UCB dental hygiene students under faculty supervision, according to the program's website.
The dental hygiene clinic currently operates in an 11,000-sq-ft space with 18 dental chairs and little room for patient privacy, according to the story. The clinic is scheduled to move into a new 14,000-sq-ft space at the university's Campus Center in the fall of 2011. The new clinic will add seven dental chairs and have upgraded equipment, including chairside computers and digital radiography.
The dental health program at UCB is one of only two three-year programs in the state to train dental hygienists, and the clinic serves as a hands-on teaching facility for the program's second-year dental hygiene students.
The other dental hygiene program in the state is located at the University of New England.
