Perfect Smile fluoride toothpaste with the coenzyme CoQ10 yielded "significant improvement" over regular fluoride toothpaste in healing gingivitis, according to a study in the May 2010 issue of the Natural Medicine Journal.
The small (30 participants), parallel-group, double-blind study was conducted by principals of Perfect Smile and BioActives, which acquired a significant equity position in Perfect Smile in April 2010. Perfect Smile toothpaste contains a 1.5% concentration of MicroActive CoQ10, a coenzyme developed by BioActives that the company said has been shown to be effective in controlling periodontal disease when used in supplement form or applied directly to the site. The study evaluated Perfect Smile toothpaste against a fluoride toothpaste without CoQ10.
The participants brushed twice daily, and the researchers measured the effects at four and eight weeks. At the end of 4 weeks, 66.6% of the experimental group (15) showed improvement, while only 16.6% of the control group showed the same improvement. At the end of eight weeks, 66.6% of the experimental group showed improvement by this standard, while 33.3% of the control group showed improvement. While these results were not statistically significant, measuring those who showed improvement at the end of four and eight weeks showed 91.6% of the experimental group met this criterion, compared with only 41.6% of the control group (p < 0.027).
MicroActive CoQ10 can also be found in Perfect Smile's fluoride-free natural toothpaste, alcohol-free mouthwash, and chewing gums. The company said it plans to introduce MicroActive CoQ10 in an oral health supplement in the near future.
