Budget cuts are threatening a dental hygiene program at Armstrong Atlantic State University (AASU) in Georgia, according to a report on the WSAV-TV Web site.
Because of a shortfall in the state budget, the university system has asked Armstrong to prepare a budget with a $5.3 million reduction for fiscal 2011. This follows a $3.5 million cut from the 2010 budget.
Cutting the hygiene program could reduce access to oral healthcare in Georgia, Matthew Allen, D.D.S., chairman of the AASU Dental Hygiene Advisory Committee and president of the Savannah Dental Society, told WSAV.
"It came kind of out of left field," he said, according to the report. "I mean we didn't know it was coming. Armstrong just built a brand new facility, less than two years ago, that's at the Savannah Mall for greater access, to provide their students with a great learning environment that's state of the art."
