3M ESPE launches new fluoride toothpaste

3M ESPE Preventive Care is now offering Clinpro 5000 1.1% sodium fluoride anticavity toothpaste, a prescription-strength toothpaste containing tricalcium phosphate, the company announced.

"Clinpro 5000 delivers more fluoride, helps strengthen enamel, and helps reverse white spot lesions better than a conventional 5,000 ppm prescription fluoride toothpaste and a 900 ppm fluoride topical creme that contains calcium phosphate," the company stated in a press release.

The toothpaste contains fluoride, calcium, and phosphate, components all naturally found in saliva. During the manufacturing process, a protective barrier is created around the calcium, allowing it to coexist with the fluoride ions, 3M ESPE noted. As the toothpaste comes into contact with saliva during brushing, the barrier breaks down and makes the calcium, phosphate, and fluoride readily available to the tooth.

"The tooth naturally absorbs these components, helping to prevent the initiation and further progression of demineralization, allowing remineralization to occur," the company stated.

The development of this 5,000 ppm fluoride and tricalcium phosphate formula is the result of a relationship between 3M ESPE and Indiana Nanotech scientists, including George Stookey, Ph.D., M.S., a pioneer in caries research.
