West Coast University debuts dental hygiene degree program

West Coast University in Southern California is now offering a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene degree program, according to the university. West Coast joins the University of Southern California, the University of the Pacific, and Loma Linda University to be one of only four universities in California offering a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and the first of its kind in Orange County.

The new program, offered at the university's Anaheim campus, was recently granted approval to launch by the state Commission on Dental Accreditation. The 33-month program will begin in April 2009 and will offer a year-round, multiple start schedule, enabling students to complete their dental hygiene educational requirements in less than three years.

The university said it has invested heavily to provide a first-rate dental hygiene program that includes the latest technology in dental simulation laboratories with fully equipped workstations and artificial patients that can be manipulated like a human patient for the most realistic, preclinical learning experience possible. During clinical sessions, students will learn to use a dental software system while providing various patient services, including sealants, fluoride application, preventive and therapeutic treatment, local anesthesia, and assessments for oral cancer, caries, and periodontal disease. Students will also learn how to take and interpret x-rays (digital and traditional) in the radiography clinic.
