New ADA guideline includes recommendation for SDF use

The ADA has released a new guideline on nonrestorative treatments for carious lesions, which includes the association's first recommendation for the use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF).

The guideline focuses on minimally invasive treatments to arrest carious lesions on primary and permanent teeth. It includes nine treatments and 11 recommendations, including the use of 38% SDF to arrest cavitated lesions on the coronal surfaces of primary and permanent teeth twice per year.

The guideline, which is based on the recommendations of experts convened by the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs and the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry, was published in the October issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association. It's the first in a planned four-part series on caries management, with the remaining three parts schedules to be released in 2019, 2020, and 2021.
