Howard U to open evening kids clinic

Two years after a 12-year-old Maryland boy died for lack of dental care, Howard University's pediatric dental department is opening an evening clinic to aid low-income children, the university's news service said.

Shocked by the death of Diamonte Driver, which stemmed from a dental abscess, Program Director Leslie Lawrence, D.D.S., has "vowed to never have another such incident happen again," according to the news service.

She said the clinic would benefit children whose parents can't easily get time away from work during the day.

"The United Health Foundation Community Dental Health Program is not just another program," Lawrence reportedly said. "It is an investment. This was all put into place so those families who traditionally fall through the cracks can have a place to bring their children in the evening."
