In the past few months, more studies have begun to examine the published evidence behind some time-tested dental procedures. This week, we examined two of these studies. The first focused on the short- and long-term effectiveness of stabilization splints to treat temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), and the review authors found mixed results. The second study concerned the quality of consensus guidelines in major implant dentistry journals. While such guidelines can help you and your colleagues make good clinical decisions and improve patient safety, what the researchers found might not reassure you about the quality of the guidelines.
