Week in Review: Chicago new products preview; amalgam separator lawsuit; TMD splints

Dear DrBicuspid Member,

One of the pleasures of the Chicago Dental Society Midwinter Meeting is the vast exhibit hall at McCormick Place with hundreds of companies showcasing their products. While the meeting opens on February 23, our coverage starts today with the first part of a preview of new and recently introduced products to look for while you're walking through the exhibit hall. See the new products here.

Also this week on DrBicuspid.com, did your practice purchase an amalgam separator when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced new regulations for mercury waste in December 2016? Many did, but developments by the Trump administration have thrown this regulation into question. Read our coverage here.

In the past few months, more studies have begun to examine the published evidence behind some time-tested dental procedures. This week, we examined two of these studies. The first focused on the short- and long-term effectiveness of stabilization splints to treat temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), and the review authors found mixed results. Read more about this study here.

The second study concerned the quality of consensus guidelines in major implant dentistry journals. While such guidelines can help you and your colleagues make good clinical decisions and improve patient safety, what the researchers found might not reassure you about the quality of the guidelines. Learn more here.

I want to wish everyone a safe Presidents Day weekend. We'll follow a reduced publishing schedule on Monday, but look for part 2 of our 2017 Chicago Midwinter Meeting products preview on Tuesday, February 21. If you are attending the meeting in Chicago, I hope to get a chance to speak with you.
